CoreWeave rents out GPU computing power and pioneered using GPUs as collateral for loans. It lost more than a billion dollars in the first half of the year. Its customers are locked into long contracts, about 40 percent of which pay out in 2028, and its three biggest customers, Microsoft, OpenAI and probably Nvidia, produced almost three-quarters of its second-quarter revenue. Oracle’s shares and bonds also slipped during the sell-off.
Why it matters
The AI boom is increasingly paid for with borrowed money, so a wobble at one heavily indebted company can ripple out to others. The Verge’s view is that CoreWeave is probably safe while customers keep paying, but the real test of whether renting out GPUs is a good business will come if AI demand slows.
